The National Basketball Association is recognized as the professional basketball league for all of North America. The NBA consists of thirty teams that are each a franchised club. The NBA was originally founded in New York City on June 6, 1946 by hockey rink owners and called it the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The name was changed to the National Basketball Association after merging with the rivaling National Basketball League in 1949.
